We are currently seeking two highly motivated and experienced Interior Designers to join our team in support of the Furniture and Interior Group (FIG) within LAUSD’s Project Execution division. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to transformational educational infrastructure projects and leave a lasting mark on Los Angeles public schools.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate client needs and develop efficient, cost-effective FF&E (furniture, fixtures & equipment) solutions within LAUSD design standards and project timelines
  • Develop interior space plans, architectural layouts, and select furnishings, finishes, and equipment for educational environments
  • Create interior design specifications including electrical and finish requirements and provide detailed cost estimates to design teams
  • Review and assess construction documents and conduct site visits to verify the implementation of design concepts and ensure safety, accessibility, and code compliance (ADA, fire/life safety, sustainability)
  • Participate in meetings and site visits to gather information, monitor progress, and assess project needs
  • Advise school administrators, project managers, and facilities personnel on the selection and procurement of FF&E and interior layouts
  • Supervise assigned projects, coordinating with logistics and procurement staff to ensure timely and budget-conscious delivery
  • Manage the procurement process, including specification writing, scheduling, coordinating deliveries, and receiving FF&E orders
  • Provide scope of work documents to support the creation of procurement contracts
  • Collaborate with manufacturers and vendors to source, design, or improve custom products that align with LAUSD standards and cost guidelines
  • Maintain accurate inventories and records, including detailed reports, vendor lists, equipment databases, and product standards
  • Assist school sites with the replacement or reordering of furniture and equipment
  • Create and present design concepts, visual aids, and final layouts to internal stakeholders for review and approval
  • Recommend improvements to procurement procedures, furniture/equipment guidelines, and design product standards

Minimum Required Qualifications

(Must meet all of the following requirements)

Experience:

  • Minimum eight (8) years’ full-time paid professional experience conceptualizing, planning, selecting, and coordinating interior layouts, interior building finishes, furniture, and equipment
  • Experience working in a public agency or school construction or modernization is preferred

Education (One of the following):

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree, preferably in interior design, architecture, or related field

OR

  • Completion of 40 semester units or equivalent related to interior design from a recognized college or university and an additional two (2) years’ experience to compensate for education

Ideal Candidate Will Also Have:

  • Expertise in space planning, color theory, and FF&E for educational environments
  • Familiarity with building codes, ADA, fire/life safety codes, and sustainable design practices
  • Proficiency with design and planning tools including AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to clearly convey design concepts to school administrators, contractors, and facilities personnel
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings and technical specifications
  • Knowledge of interior design studio best practices and public-sector project management
  • Experience managing logistics, scheduling, procurement, and business data related to FF&E
